Balaramgadi is an amazing destination to experience while visiting India. Located a few kilometers from the famous beach at Chandipur, Balaramgadi is a place that offers two different tales to tell because of its two sources of water. You can see where the Budhabalanga River meets the Bay of Bengal before you even step onto the beach. Right next to this meeting point, there is a calm body of water near the mouth of the river that does not get disrupted by the waves of the ocean, no matter how choppy they become.
It is thought to be a special place because it is located at the meeting place of two parts of the world: the river represents all of the soil from the hills, and the ocean represents all of the salt from around the world. Locals believe that the water in this area has a unique spirit, as it goes from being fresh to salty and back again, continuously. Early in the morning, the fishing boats are lined up in a row sort of like pearls on a necklace, creating a very modest scene that shows how much of a role the tide plays in the lives of the people in this area.

ToggleUnlike other beaches, you won’t find beautiful chairs or umbrellas on Balaramgadi Beach. You will find a working, thriving coastal environment in Balasore. The location of the Beach is unique due to the geography created by the mouth of the river. The beach is made up of black, fertile sand. At low tide, the water disappears for many miles; just like at Chandipur Beach. I had the opportunity to visit on a chilly Tuesday morning in January, and the scent of rotting fish and damp nets filled the air.
I watched as dozens of brightly colored fishing boats returned to shore after a long night of catching fish. Watching the large surf crash at the mouth of the river was intimidating; then I watched the fisherman manoeuvring their boats effortlessly in the surf. They did not speak much; they simply used the wind to help them find their way. The Balaramgadi shore is the centre of the fishing industry in the local area and you can feel the energy of the hard work done by the local fisherman with every puff of wind.
Walk from the ocean a few minutes forward and discover Balaramgadi temple, whose small stone construction has been battling the ocean for centuries. The cultural atmosphere surrounding this temple is one of pure respectfulness. Before making their way out to sea, fishermen typically stop at this spot and request safety. They believe that the goddess of the temple has their boat in her care. Accordingly, they show their devotion by leaving simple offerings of rice and flowers. Visiting this temple is one of the most spiritually uplifting experiences possible along with the other Balasore sea beaches. You will not hear loud music at this location—merely the sound of the temple’s bell mixing in with the waves of the ocean.
The heart knows things that the signs will never communicate; namely, that the ocean, like its mother, is powerful, and the temple is a place of courage for the people who live within her reach.
