If you leave Phulbani in your car and come to the forests of the Eastern Ghats, the deep, thunderous hum you will hear after some time is the sound of Putudi. According to the locals, the water of Putudi, the waterfall at which the earth cracks to let water out, is as pure as the clear river by the side of the waterfall which runs for some distance like a long silver lake shimmering in the sunshine. The reason behind this spot is, it is internally felt that the river is a mother who remains calm and silent and it is only at the edge of the hill that she lets out her roar. It is believed that the water of Putudi carries the healing properties of herbal plants of the hills of Kandhamal. You can feel the forest breathing as the morning mist over the river is so dense.

TogglePutudi waterfall is not the type of place to ask for a whoosh of soft breeze or a slow drop of summer sunlight. This waterfall is an amazing escape and it is a very strong drop that is about 60 feet high. Many large black rocks that have been smoothed by the running water for centuries make this place very dangerous. I recall my trip there on a chilly Sunday morning in December. You will find a narrow steep side path through the woods if you want to go downstairs. Standing under the waterfall and letting the water droplets hit your face can be a quite scary feeling. One’s inner self hears what outward signs don’tthe fact that this Kandhamal waterfall is the real king of the forest. The water strikes the pool at the very bottom with such force that a very refreshing wind is generated at all times, even at the time of the highest sun.
Phulbani’s most famous picnic spot is this one because it is not only picturesque but also very accessible. In fact, during the cold months, you can see families from various parts of the district carrying their large cooking pots along with firewood. In a way, it is a cultural scene of happiness in its most elemental form. Local Kondh people, who are characterized by a gentle, unhurried charm, are often nearby selling fresh forest honey or turmeric. They have such a loving relationship with the forest that you can almost sense it in the atmosphere. This is the place among all tourist spots in Phulbani where people come to be in each other’s company. They hardly speak; they simply place themselves on sun-warmed stones and let the sound of the water be their conversation. It is a lowly spot that shows you how little it takes to make one happy, just good food, family, and the sounds of nature.
To get the best experience of Putudi, you should plan your visit during October to March. The summer in Kandhamal is very harsh and the hot weather might make the uphill climb tough. Match your shoes with excellent grip. The lane from the parking spot to the waterfall is very slippery and quite uneven. I recommend you bring your own provisions as there are no shops once you enter the forest area. Walk during the day so that you can be back before dark. Forests get dark very fast and the route leading to the main town can be dangerous. Remain outdoors near the water for a long time. No need to hurry. Allow the music of the waterfall to rinse away the clatter of your mind.
