8 best places to explore in Chilika Lake

Chilika Lake is one the largest brackish water lagoons in Asia and the second largest coastal lagoon in the world to the Caledonia lagoon, covering an area of over 1,100 square kilometres (420 sq mi). This place is spread over the Puri, Khordha and Ganjam districts of Odisha state on the east coast of India, Daya River, flowing into the Bay of Bengal.

In the late 1990s, Chilika was a weed-infested dying lake, but thanks to ecological restoration by the Odisha government, it’s once again a steady source of livelihood for thousands and a vibrant refuge for wildlife for threatened wetlands everywhere. Chilika is one of Asia’s most important wintering grounds for migratory birds.

Tourism was initially meant to provide an alternative livelihood to people from just one fishing village that was affected by the opening of the sea mouth, but thanks to its immense popularity, the business has expanded to several hundred boats from many fishing villages.

Since Chilika is one of the most famous spots in Orissa, let me tell you 8 best places to explore Chilika Lake. These places include Nalabana Island, Kalijai temple, Satapada island, Birds island, honeymoon island, Breakfast island and Mangaljodi

Nalabana Island

Nalbana Bird Sanctuary, or Nalabana Island, is the core area of the Ramsar-designated wetlands of Chilika Lake. The name “Nalabana” comes from two Odia words: “Nala,” meaning reed, and “Bana,” meaning forest. True to its name, the island is covered with reed beds, providing an ideal habitat for birds to nest and thrive. It was declared a bird sanctuary under the Wildlife Protection Act in 1972.  The island features several watchtowers, with the first offering stunning panoramic views of its vibrant avian life and serene landscape.

The island disappears in the monsoon and reappears gradually as the monsoon recedes. Fully functional from mid-October, the island becomes home to a huge variety of migratory birds from both India and outside, who come to the island to feed on mudflats.
