Heading out into the Rayagada block of the Gajapati district, you are sure to be returning to nature and away from the bustling scenes of Paralakhemundi. As you go along, the temperature will drop, and at some point, the forest will be so dense that it will look almost like a green wall. That is the Gudguda, a place that very few visitors find because it is so well hidden. By contrast to the famous low wide falls of our state, Gudguda waterfall Gajapati is a group of three small and very clear cascades.
It is near the Raghunathpur village and in one valley, which is so hidden that only a few hours of sunlight can fall on the water in a day. Why this particular place? It is the strong inner conviction of the followers that the water emanates from an unknown spring high up on the Mahendragiri hills. The people of the surrounding area have a myth about the water being so clean that it can purify the soul from the very heat.

ToggleThe Gajapati waterfall at Gudguda is not a big force that makes a lot of noise. Instead, it is like a nice, soft music that the water makes as it runs over the smooth black stones. The land here is like a set of natural stairs. The water changes into small round pools at each level before going to the next. I remember when I was there on a quiet Friday morning. The only noises were the water running over the stones and the occasional call of a hill myna. It is a simple place, but it makes you feel like you have gone back to the old days. It is a little bit scary to follow the forest path when it rains, but most of the year, it is a place of total peace.
Gudguda in gajapati feels just right for a peaceful picnic. Most go to Gandahati falls, but if you want calm, this spot wins. The air stays still, no loud sounds, no rushing crowds. Families sit on flat stones, eating simple food they made at home. Everyone moves gently, not breaking the quiet. You don’t need a guide, just follow the path covered in moss. The water’s gentle flow guides you on. It feels natural. Probably best when it is sunny and still. So it’s easy to relax and just be. Plus, the woods keep things peaceful. Seems like a good spot for a peaceful Sunday morning.
The best time to visit the stunning Gudguda waterfall Gajapati is between October and February, coming in winter also helps because the cool air makes your walk through the forest super enjoyable. Make sure to bring sandals that have a good grip because the stones around the pools are extremely slippery. What I personally recommend is that you have your own water and a small pack of refreshments from Paralakhemundi as there are no vendors once you enter the village area. Find a spot by the middle pool, put your feet in the cold water, and simply observe the sun rays passing through the trees. This is a spot that does not require anything from you except for your quiet presence.
