The royal family maintained a continuous source of power; for instance, one former ruler, Rajendra Narayan Singh Deo, was appointed chief minister of Orissa years later. Because of the continued strength of the royal foundation the people of Orissa were able to maintain stability throughout the changes from the monarchy to colonialism.
The Sailashree Palace in Balangir has been constructed using a combination of ancient Indian architectural style and British Colonial building techniques. The walls contain enclosing designs that have become a way to join window framing to railing, with each area representing a piece of art.
