The Sapua project dam is located in the Dhenkanal district of Odisha, near the town of Rasol, surrounded by tranquil rolling hills surrounding a still surface of water that is framed by trees and open land, creating a very unspoiled natural environment; people who do wander from developed roads or paved streets refer to it as Sapua dam. More people are mentioning this name as they find their way there when they want peace and solitude; for nature lovers, who could go anywhere else for peace, as soon as they enter the area surrounding the reservoir, the noise of the city disappears, and the voice of the wind blowing slowly over the surface of the reservoir.

ToggleThe Sapua Dam, a beautiful natural setting that feels tranquil; like someone’s been wrapping me up in blankets or mists for what seems like ages. The hills that surround the dam are also very green, and have their forest areas along the bottom of their respective valleys nesting very closely together to enclose the dam’s reservoir. At dawn, light is reflected off of the water’s surface creating ripples of colour from the sky. At 8 PM every evening, the air is so soft. The surface of the dam serves as a mirror for the reflection of everything above it by turning trees and clouds both upsides down while continually keeping them in their same places on the ground.
On weekends, families, young people, or any fast-moving travel groups flock to Sapua Dam as it has become one of the most popular sites for casual outings in Dhenkanal. The open fields surrounding the river provide plenty of space to sit back, take pictures, and move slowly with the sky. During holidays, you can hear the sounds of families and friends enjoying the outdoors in the single flat area surrounding the reservoir.
The relaxing, peaceful environment appeals to those who want to avoid crowded business and have a picnic seated on the grass along the shoreline (some even stay awhile with their families).
The dam is beyond Rasol Dhenkanal, hidden amongst peaceful rolling hills and limitless blue skies. There are winding dirt roads that lead to the dam, passing through farm fields with crops moving in the sun. Forests line the route and trees appear to be leaning into the road as if listening for something. For those who like to be alone there is a feeling of familiarity in this place and it has a pace that slows down naturally without effort.
