Vedvyas- Where the Two Rivers Meet

The confluence of two powerful rivers, the Koel River and the Sankh River, has been happening for a long time. This beautiful body of water is the place where many people worship, and it has some interesting history behind it. When you get closer to the main temple, the first thing you will see is this flowing water. This water is not stagnant, but rather it is a flowing and living element. The locals here usually ask, “Which district is Rourkela?” because they know that Rourkela is in Sundargarh, but they know Rourkela is much more than just an address. It is the home of Bedabyasa. According to tradition, this area was where Sage Vyasa wrote the Mahabharata. This water has memories of Sage Vyasa’s words, and the stones in the vicinity have memories of the sage’s presence. As the sun rises in the morning, mist dances over the point and wraps around the walls of the temple, creating a connection between you and the past.

Temple Rourkela

Temples are often built to commemorate the past, and they serve as reminders of faith. At the Bedabyasa Temple, faith is strong but silent; one does not come to the temple for hurriedness or to “get things done” but instead finds comfort in simply being present and listening. The Vedvyasa Temple represents a connection between multiple times, a bridge that crosses from one to another, so much so that I recall being there one rainy Tuesday in July just beside the steps as an elderly gentleman was feeding fish in the river without ever looking up or stopping but just spreading grain with an occasional sound of prayer spoken under his breath, he also expressed how much the river guards the memory of the sage who lived there, it expresses this in its geography; the land bends, the trees slant, and the temple stands in the middle of everything surrounded by all 3 elements making it one of the most significant Rourkela tourist attraction for those who care about their roots.

A Sunday in the Sun

People from the city consider this a popular picnic accessible to the Rourkela community. During the cooler months, these grounds will be used to host many happy memories for families and friends to find comfort in under the shade of a banyan tree while enjoying homemade food, as well as talking, laughing and watching the boats pass by. I feel this is also one of Rourkela tourist places. Some children enjoy playing in the sand; some older adults share tea with each other; others walk along the beach and share their personal experience of company through cultural expressions. The overall sensation of being together is very simple. People demonstrate humbleness as they enjoy their time together without using many words to communicate their happiness to one another. The park is a hidden treasure within Rourkela that can remain quiet even during busy times in the city.

Walking the Path

Please plan your trip to the Bedabyasa temple during the winter (from about November to February.) This is when the temperature is mild; in the summer months, it can be very hot. Wear sturdy shoes as some of the steps leading down to the river may be slippery. Also, my suggestion is to get there early and see the sunrise on the river. Once you arrive, sit on the stone wall, and do not take numerous pictures; just observe the rivers merging into one another. This site will not appreciate your noise but will appreciate your silence.
