Every place here has its own story to tell, and has its own history. There are so many small yet very old temples scattered throughout the city. Amongst all this, there is Maha Mrityunjay temple in Varanasi which is one of the oldest Shiva temples. This Temple isn’t the most popular in the city but it is one of the most important temples in the city. The temple is about Lord Shiva and his mrityunjay avatar. Why Visit the “Maha Mrityunjay temple”?

Asking around to the locals and the priests about the Maha Mrityunjay Mantra is basically Hope. “Maha Mrityunjay temple also means having Hope.

So many people believe that sincere prayers offered here bring strength during difficult times. Some pray for recovery from illness. Others seek blessings before an important journey, a new job or a major life event. It is not unusual to see people sitting quietly after offering prayers instead of leaving immediately. No rush. Just a few peaceful moments.

I have noticed that the temple’s most beautiful detail is the Amrit Kund. Amrit Kund is a sacred well which is located inside the temple. From what I heard from the locals and people in the temple is that the water in the sacred well carries divine blessings. So many devotees collect this water and take it back to their home.

The temple also feels different from many larger pilgrimage sites. There are no huge crowds on most days. No loud announcements. Just the sound of bells, prayers and conversations between priests and devotees.

What Makes the Mrityunjay Temple Unique?

Every temple in Varanasi is unique and different. These temples were made in different eras and it shows in their architecture. Now “Mrityunjay temple is remembered for its peaceful atmosphere. The entrance is so simple and I remember it makes you so welcoming.

Walking through the temple, you’ll see that small details begin to stand out. You can spot the fresh flowers placed before the Shiva Lingam and lamps glowing near the temple. So many devotees including me carried plates filled with bilva leaves, milk and sweets. A familiar scene repeated every day. Yet never exactly the same.

What are the Temple timings?

The “Maha Mrityunjay temple is open throughout the day. It is open seven days of the week. The temple usually opens early in the morning, around 5 am till 12 pm. It closes around 12 for afternoon break. In Hinduism it is not allowed to pray in the afternoon, especially in north India. Now the gates open again at 4 pm and stay open until 9 pm.

If you want to visit the temple when it’s very quiet and calm like me, the morning is often the quietest time to visit. Mornings really have fewer people, a very peaceful atmosphere.

Special pujas and rituals take place throughout the day, especially on Mondays. Now during the month of Shravan and on Mahashivratri, are the most crowded. This time is busiest as this time the devotees offer their prayers to Lord Shiva. The temple can have very long queues from early morning.
